George Bellows (1882-1925) was an American painter and lithographer known for his depictions of city life in and around New York City. He was associated with the Ashcan School, artists who sought to realistically portray urban reality, particularly including the lower working classes of people. The word "Ashcan" originally was used as a derisive nickname for their styles, but the artists themselves later began utilizing it themselves. Bellows died at the age of 42.
