The Hirshhorn Museum was the first art museum on the National Mall to break away from the neo-Greek temple building design that dominates the older buildings nearby. In a way, the Hirshhorn looks something like an elevated concrete chocolate layer cake.
Similar in many ways to the other collections in DC (the Hirshhorn features works by Henry Moore, Rodin, art by Kathy Kollwitz, a large Reginald Marsh Steeplechase Park egg tempera painting, among other works), on the other hand there is an emphasis on modern 20th century abstract works and objects that makes it a nice counterpart to the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art which has a simialr selection there, with the Hirshhorn just a short walk across the nationak mall greenway that is between the two buildings.
